Comment on MoD redundancies
Following the Ministery of Defence announcement of further Armed Forces redundancies, Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said:
"Today’s announcement that a further 4,480 UK Army personnel have received redundancy notices is extremely concerning, bringing to more than 10,000 the total number of Armed Forces personnel made redundant by the UK Government since 2011.
"This has a devastating effect on many servicemen, servicewomen and their families – particularly those who have not applied to be considered for redundancy. We therefore call on the UK Government to fully support the personnel and service families affected by this latest – and single biggest - round of Armed Forces redundancies.
"Scotland has already seen disproportionate cuts in our defence footprint, which has fallen by more than a third since 2000. Between 2000 and 2012 Scotland saw a fall of 35.66% in its service and civilian Ministry of Defence personnel - compared to a fall of just under 20% across the UK.
"These redundancies – with the prospect of still more to come – will impact on Scotland’s military personnel and communities and demonstrates, once again, that Scotland’s defence needs are not being addressed by Westminster."
