Financial support for V&A Dundee

Backing for museum in its first year.

An extra £361,000 is being provided to support the new V&A Dundee in its first year of operation.

The Scottish Government was an early supporter of the plans for V&A Dundee as a fantastic addition to Scotland's world-class museums and provided £38 million towards the construction of the building, which is set to open to the public on 15 September.

This announcement will see the Scottish Government provide a total of £1.36 million funding to support the museum's activity during 2018-19.

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said:

"V&A Dundee is both a powerful symbol of Dundee's new confidence and a prestigious venue which has already increased the national and international profile of the city.

"The Scottish Government has long been a committed supporter of the museum and to ensure it reaches its full potential, I am happy to announce further funding of £361,000 this year."

Philip Long, Director of V&A Dundee, said:

"V&A Dundee is a highly ambitious project, creating a new international design museum at the heart of the city's regenerated waterfront.

"The support of the Scottish Government has been essential to realising both Kengo Kuma's remarkable architecture and the development of the museum, and this additional funding will enable V&A Dundee to have the most successful opening year."

Background

The additional £361,000 funding adds to a previously announced package of support, worth £1 million a year in the first ten years of its operation. The Scottish Government also contributed £5 million in revenue funding to support development costs to the end of 2017-18.

The V&A Dundee will open its doors for the first time on Saturday, 15 September. The opening will be marked by a two day celebration involving design, music and performance.

The museum is the flagship development of the city's Waterfront Project, acting as a magnet for Dundee's regeneration and attracting investment and tourists to the city.
