Hunger in Yemen

The Scottish Government has donated £250,000 of humanitarian aid to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Yemen Crisis Appeal, which was launched today.

After years of political turmoil, Yemen is facing a major humanitarian crisis, which has left children and families in urgent need of food, water and medical supplies.

The DEC – Disasters Emergency Committee – brings together 13 leading UK aid agencies to raise money at times of humanitarian crisis in poorer countries.

International Development Minister Alasdair Allan said:

“Since March 2015, Yemen has been engulfed in a state of civil war that has aggravated an already dire humanitarian crisis brought on by years of poverty, poor governance, conflict and ongoing instability.

“Almost 19 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian aid due to the conflict, which has caused forced displacement, severe economic decline, and the collapse of basic services and institutions.

“The Scottish government will do all we can to help Yemen’s most vulnerable people in their hour of need, and I hope that today's announcement of £250,000 funding for the Disasters Emergency Committee Yemen Crisis Appeal will allow us to reach the worst affected areas of the country.”
