Salen pre-school expansion
Gaelic learning to benefit from £150,000 investment in Mull school.

Nursery pupils will benefit from £150,000 improvements to the pre-school building at Sgoil Araich (pre-school), Education Secretary Michael Russell has announced.

The investment will be used by Argyll and Bute Council to expand the building used by the pre-school staff and children.

Mr Russell said:

“Sgoil Araich works very hard to not only make Gaelic an enjoyable part of classes, but to share that work to draw in parents and others so that the children see Gaelic as part of their every-day lives.

“Across Scotland, the greatest success we are having in encouraging more Gaelic speakers is amongst young people. It is the result of meeting the demand from parents and attracting good teachers to Gaelic medium education to bring lessons to life.

“If we are to be able to continue to support a growth in new, younger speakers we need to have the combination of talent and resources for them to learn in. I am sure that the expansion of the building of Sgoil Araich will mean that more opportunities are for children and staff as they start out on their journey through school.”

Argyll and Bute Council’s Policy Lead for Children and Families, Councillor Mary Jean Devon, said:

“The Gaelic language and culture has played an important part in the history of Argyll and Bute and the council is continually celebrating and promoting Gaelic through our language plan.

“We wish to increase the number of Gaelic speakers in Argyll and Bute and this funding for the Sgoil Araich (pre-school) unit at Salen Primary School will allow the council to expand the unit, reflecting the local demand. We are very pleased indeed to receive this funding.”
