Sheriff Principal Appointed

Head role for Sheriffdom of Glasgow and Strathkelvin filled.

Her Majesty the Queen has appointed Sheriff Craig Turnbull as Sheriff Principal of the Sheriffdom of Glasgow and Strathkelvin, on the recommendation of the First Minister.

Sheriff Turnbull will take up appointment as Sheriff Principal from 1 September 2016.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon made her recommendation for appointment on the basis of a report by the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland.

Craig Turnbull is a Sheriff in the Sheriffdom of North Strathclyde, sitting predominantly at Greenock and Dumbarton Sheriff Courts.

A graduate of the University of Strathclyde, he was admitted as a solicitor in 1988, working for A.C.White in Ayr and Levy & McRae in Glasgow before joining MacRoberts in 1993.

He became a partner there in 1997, specialising in commercial and construction disputes and health and safety and environmental prosecutions.

He was appointed as a part time sheriff in 2011 and served as the managing partner of MacRoberts from 2011 - 2014.

The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland is an independent advisory public body with the role of recommending individuals for appointment to judicial offices within the Board’s remit including judge of the Court of Session, chair of the Scottish Land Court, sheriff principal, sheriff, and summary sheriff.

The First Minister has statutory responsibility for making recommendations to Her Majesty the Queen and is required by statute to consult the Lord President of the Court of Session before making her recommendation.

The salary of a Sheriff Principal is £144,172 per annum.
