Statement from Cabinet Secretary John Swinney in response to Bank of Scotland Report on Jobs
Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth, John Swinney said:
“These latest Bank of Scotland labour market figures provide further welcome evidence that the jobs market in Scotland is strengthening with Scotland outperforming the rest of the UK. For the thirty first consecutive month the Barometer also shows an improving position in Scotland.
“These positive figures come on the back of last week’s ONS statistics which show an increase of 47,000 people in work across Scotland during the 3 month period February to April. This puts us ahead of the rest of the UK in terms of all three labour market indicators of employment, unemployment and inactivity rates.
“Foreign direct investment projects coming to Scotland in 2012 are also at their highest level for 15 years – showing yet more signs of recovery for the Scottish economy.
“With the full fiscal and economic powers of independence the Scottish Government could do yet more to strengthen our economy and create jobs.”
