Media Brief - Tuesday 7 January 2014
Post Cabinet Media Briefing by the First Minister’s Official Spokesperson (FMOS) and the First Minister’s Special Adviser (FMSA)
The FMOS welcomed journalists to the briefing and gave an update following that morning’s meeting of the Scottish Cabinet:
- Environment Minister Paul Wheelhouse will be answering a topic question in the Chamber this afternoon, from Elaine Murray MSP, on the recent flooding. Mr Wheelhouse will also be providing a fuller statement to Parliament on the issue on January 8.
- There were 15 meetings of the Scottish Government Operational Resilience Room (SGoRR) during December and January, with the First Minister chairing meetings on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Meanwhile, the Bellwin Scheme has been made available for local authorities to apply for emergency assistance.
- Finance Secretary John Swinney gave Cabinet colleagues an economic update, highlighting that the trends for positive economic indicators, as reported at the end of 2013, have continued.
Asked if there would be a formal announcement in the Parliament that afternoon regarding free school meals provision, the FMSA said that journalists would need to wait for the speech from the First Minister.
The FMSA added that the First Minister had met before Cabinet with a group of stakeholder organisations with an interest in free school meals, and that the meeting had been productive.
