Free public transport travels for elderly in Scotland: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

Can we, being Dutch citizens, use the “free public transport” facilities and if so, what do we need to do to do so? Alternative question is: if we cannot make use of said free facilities, are there any low cost reduction schemes available through Scottish Transport and what can we do make use of them?

Response

To be eligible for any of the Scottish National Concessionary Travel Schemes, including free bus travel for people aged 60 and over, you must be a resident of Scotland for more than six months of the year.

Transport Scotland does not hold details of other low cost options that travel operators may use. However, you can use the Traveline Scotland website to obtain details of operators. The website also includes a journey planner which will provide the various methods of transport between chosen destinations within Scotland. By using this it will provide details of who the operator is for your chosen journey. It would be advisable to contact any of the operators you are thinking of using and enquiring if they offer any type of discounted fare.
